Aww, it's our first flame war you guys!
Some of you think we should have the right to carry over builds we've cherished for years (such as fen's enormous spaceship that has taken him literally years to build by himself), while some of you think that new players don't feel this is entirely fair to them that established players have such a huge advantage (we'll get to how we define this "advantage") over them on what is, most definitely, a new server. You've stuck with us through our teething problems, I hope you'll stick with us through a few more, and I consider each and every one of you founding members of this new community built on the bones of one that a few of us spent an ungodly amount of time with. With that said, I feel it's important to remind everyone of rule one and not devolve this conversation into childish namecalling and unfounded argument like what has happened on Skype. If you want to discuss this here, you discuss it like adults. Remember it's just a game.
If we decide to keep builds, it seems the best way to go would be to use them for the server's overall gain. I personally want a load of towers in Vulfgaard because I want people to build towers there, and the easiest way of getting people to realise that the city needs towers is to put towers there; otherwise, I have to direct people to follow my plan for the city, which is the exact opposite of what I want to do. What I want for the city I founded is to have other people there, changing it into a collaborative effort between creative people, not for it to be my little lego playpen where I decide everything, that's not my deal. To achieve this, I need to have builds there, so others will want to make more builds there and make their own mark on the landscape. This is what I mean when I say the builds are there to add to the server, as our best builds are our best assets when we want to advertise to people we want joining our server and joining our builds; it's its own form of targeted advertising. I don't want a great empire of other people's work to call my own, and if I did I'd rather have it in real life to be honest.
The general counterpoint is that a build carried over from a previous map does not strictly count as hand built and therefore violates the rules, as well as giving older players an unfair advantage. While community tradition has always been to save old builds, this came from a time when Mojang would release a new update every month and we'd start a new map to accommodate the people that wanted whatever new feature had been implemented, instead of using our brains to think up a creative solution. This ultimately lead to less and less player interest and the ultimate downfall of our server. As for any notion of an unfair advantage, I can't help but completely disagree with this. Aside from how confusing it is that you've assigned advantages to this game like it's even possible to be winning or losing, what happens when one of you has been here for years, surviving through dynasties of leadership and building an entire replica of, say, Minas Tirith along the way? Is that build to be destroyed because other people are starting anew? I see it the same way, new people will join this server after everyone's well established and there are going to be these proposed "advantages" between you and new players. I can accept the notion that copying builds doesn't adhere exactly to our rules, and there's been some pretty serious abuse of creative powers that we'll get to after we're done with the matter in hand, but adding saying you can have an advantage over others in Minecraft is like saying you can win lego. It doesn't make sense.
If we decide that old builds are worth having, but we don't want them to impact gameplay on the current map, we will probably have some kind of museum full of our old builds. Any unfinished builds will be completed via worldedit unless the original creator intends to finish it by hand themselves.
This poll ends on 1st May.
